Ventilator Care in the Home Setting

Pediatric Home Care Nurse helps child breatheOne of the most complicated patient requirements is the use of a ventilator in order to maintain breathing. These patients must have a competent nurse with current knowledge of and experience with the latest medical technology. They must also have the ability to work with patients and their families who are experiencing the challenges associated with ventilator use.

Surprisingly, many of the ventilator dependent patients cared for at home are children. Children on ventilators present additional challenges related to creating an environment that nurtures normal growth and development and socialization. It is not unusual for a home care nurse to accompany a child using a ventilator to school and other activities.
