Elder Care: 5 Therapeutic Activities Your Loved One Can Enjoy!
Posted: 9/8/2014 12:00 AM by
Making sure that your elderly loved one stays active, even in their later years, is the best way for them to maintain their health. Rather than sitting around alone all day long, exercise ensures that your loved one is getting out of the house, meeting new people, and keeping their body and minds as sharp as possible. Here are 5 activities that your elderly loved one will enjoy that will also keep them active for many years to come.
This is a water activity that can help with movements if your elderly loved one has difficulties with that. The water is perfect for your loved one because it does not add any stress to their joints. In addition, the pool is usually heated for these activities. This means that your elderly loved ones muscles will warm up and they will be able to easily perform more movements than they normally would do on land.
Everyone likes some type of music and choosing to use it as an activity is a great way to help improve the health of your elderly loved one. While there are music therapists that can help with these activities, as long as you can find some instruments and a lesson plan to use then you will be just fine doing it with your loved one.
Light therapy can be really therapeutic for your loved one if they live in a northern region where they can go a long time without seeing the sun. Many seniors who suffer from mood disorders, sleep disorders, depression, and Seasonal Affective Disorder will often benefit from using this kind of therapy. During the therapy, your loved one will have exposure to a light source that will have the same wavelengths as the sun. These lights can often improve their moods and make it easier for them to feel better.
Another form of light therapy that can be very therapeutic for your elderly loved one is known as color therapy. Instead of just having one light that mimics the sun, lights of different colors will be used in order to increase the spiritual, physical, and emotional energy levels of your elderly loved one. It is believed that this kind of therapy is a good way to balance out the entire system in the body so your loved one will feel nice and rejuvenated.
Can you remember when you were a little kid and it was fun to get messy and create some artwork? Art can be almost anything from playing with clay, painting a picture, cutting pictures up into a collage, or even finger painting. Keeping your hands busy is a great way to get your feelings out so you can feel better. This is the basis of art therapy. This kind of therapy is meant to have your loved one focus on their inner imagination, perceptions, and feelings. They are then to take those thoughts and put them on the paper so that it all gets out.
