With the chaotic pace of the holiday season, seniors can feel not only exhausted and overwhelmed, but sometimes left out of the fun, as younger family members are caught up in going to parties, shopping, running errands, and a deluge of activities. It’s important for families to take a step back and think through how to best include their older loved ones in the festivities in ways that will be enjoyable for everyone. The New York home care experts at Interim HealthCare offer the following suggestions to get you started:
  • Support a cause. Brainstorm, as a family, some philanthropic causes that are near and dear to your hearts, and then determine a way to make a difference. For example, if you care deeply about neglected animals, baking dog treats to take to the local animal shelter makes for a fun and meaningful activity that all can enjoy.
  • Binge watch holiday classics. Who doesn’t love those timeless holiday movies, which can spark memories in older family members and newfound delight in the younger generations? Grab some blankets, pop some popcorn, serve up steaming mugs of hot cocoa, and settle in to watch some favorites.
  • Schedule a crafternoon. There are countless creative craft ideas to be found on the Internet for all ages. Scroll through Pinterest or other craft-inspiring sites, pick out a few to try, and spend an afternoon creating holiday decorations together.
  • Sing your hearts out. Music has an amazing ability to spark memories in seniors, and is especially fun for kids when a few simple musical instruments are thrown into the mix. Pick up some jingle bells, gather around the piano, and join together in some indoor caroling. Taking a little extra time to reminisce over each song adds an extra measure of nostalgia.
  • Play ball! Or, any of a number of games, from cards to board games to video games, or something as simple as charades. You’re never too old (or young) to appreciate the simple joys of play!
Most importantly, set aside plenty of quality time to simply enjoy being together this holiday season with the ones you love. Interim HealthCare can help in a variety of ways to make this a memorable holiday for you and your senior loved ones, such as:
  • Light housekeeping, laundry, meal preparation, and running errands – allowing families to concentrate less on tasks and chores and more on each other
  • Safe, escorted transportation for seniors to holiday events and activities
  • Assistance with decorating the home, addressing and mailing out holiday cards, etc.
  • Friendly companionship to share in conversations and favorite pastimes with seniors
  • And much more
