For more than a decade, I’ve had the opportunity to work closely with organizations throughout Western Massachusetts that share an important goal with us at Interim HealthCare: helping older adults remain safe, independent and connected to their communities.

Three of those organizations are Greater Springfield Senior Services, Highland Valley Elder Services and LifePath. Interim HealthCare is fortunate to work with each of them in providing in-home services throughout our region. But I’ve always believed that being a good community partner should mean more than simply fulfilling the terms of a contract.

It should also mean giving something back.

For more than 12 years, I have served on the Area Agency on Aging Advisory Group at Greater Springfield Senior Services, where I currently serve as Chair. I have also served for more than 10 years on Highland Valley Elder Services’ Area Agency on Aging Advisory Council and recently became Chair there as well.

This year, I also joined the Citizens Advisory Board at LifePath, giving me another opportunity to contribute to an organization serving older adults, people with disabilities, caregivers and families in our region.

These organizations do much more than administer programs. They identify community needs, coordinate services, advocate for older adults and people with disabilities, and bring together people and organizations that can help address those needs.

Serving on their advisory groups gives me an opportunity to contribute the perspective of someone who works every day in home care. Just as importantly, it gives me the opportunity to listen.

I hear different perspectives, learn more about the challenges facing older adults and their families, and gain a broader understanding of how our aging-services network works together. That perspective makes me better at what I do at Interim HealthCare.

I believe there is a responsibility that comes with doing business in a community. When organizations like these entrust providers like us with serving the people who depend on their programs, we should be willing to contribute our time and experience in return.

Western Massachusetts has a strong network of people and organizations working on behalf of older adults, people with disabilities and their families. None of us does that work alone.

For me, serving on these advisory groups — including the opportunity to chair two of them — is one way I can give back and help strengthen the community partnerships that make our work possible.

At Interim HealthCare of West Springfield, we believe that the best measure of our success comes from the people we have the privilege to serve. Earlier this year, we invited our clients and their families to participate in our annual Client Satisfaction Survey, and we're proud to share the results.
