What’s Happening
As summer temperatures rise, it’s important to remember that older adults are more vulnerable to heat-related illness. Aging bodies don’t adjust to temperature changes as quickly, and many seniors also live with chronic conditions or take medications that can affect hydration and the body’s ability to cool itself. That’s why proactive summer safety is so important for caregivers, families, and seniors themselves.
Why heat is more dangerous for seniors
Adults over 65 are at higher risk for heat exhaustion, dehydration, and heat stroke. The body naturally produces less sweat with age, making it harder to regulate internal temperature. Certain medications—such as those for blood pressure or heart conditions—can also increase sensitivity to heat.
Even mild overheating can escalate quickly, which is why early prevention is key.
Simple ways to stay safe in the heat
1. Stay hydrated—before you feel thirsty
Water is essential. Encourage regular fluid intake throughout the day, not just at mealtimes. Dehydration can lead to dizziness, confusion, fatigue, and more serious complications if not addressed.
2. Keep cool indoors during peak heat
Air conditioning is the safest way to stay cool. If AC isn’t available, consider public places like libraries, community centers, or shopping areas during the hottest part of the day.
3. Dress for the weather
Lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing helps the body stay cooler. Hats and sunglasses add extra protection for time outdoors.
4. Avoid peak sun hours
Try to limit outdoor activity between late morning and mid-afternoon when temperatures are highest.
5. Watch for warning signs
Caregivers should monitor for symptoms such as heavy sweating, weakness, nausea, headache, muscle cramps, dizziness, or confusion. These may indicate heat exhaustion and require immediate cooling and hydration.
How caregivers can help
Checking in regularly during hot weather can make a life-saving difference. Make sure seniors have easy access to water, fans or air conditioning, and a cool environment. Encourage rest and reduce unnecessary outdoor activity during extreme heat.
A shared responsibility

Sioux Falls is full of family-friendly fun—and the best part is that many of the city’s most memorable experiences are completely free. Whether you’re planning a weekend adventure or looking for simple ways to get the kids outside and exploring, there’s something for every age and interest.
One of the most iconic stops is Falls Park, the city’s namesake and centerpiece. Families can walk the scenic trails, watch the Big Sioux River cascade over the quartzite falls, and climb the observation tower for incredible views. Just steps away, you’ll also find SculptureWalk and the impressive Arc of Dreams, a downtown public art experience that turns an ordinary stroll into an outdoor gallery.
For families who love learning while exploring, the Old Courthouse Museum and Pettigrew Home & Museum offer a glimpse into local history at no cost. Kids and adults alike can step back in time and discover stories that shaped Sioux Falls.
If your crew needs to burn some energy, the Big Sioux River Recreation Trail offers miles of paved paths perfect for biking, walking, or scootering while enjoying views of parks and the river throughout the city.
Nature lovers can head to the Outdoor Campus for hands-on outdoor learning experiences or visit the peaceful Japanese Gardens, a quiet escape right in the heart of the city. Both are great options for slowing down and reconnecting as a family.
