Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's disease can be incredibly emotional, especially when their condition affects their ability to do simple things, or to recall important moments in their lives. Many people in the Solomons area are already in this position, while others are doing their best to look out for signs that their older relatives might need Alzheimer's care.

Unfortunately, it's also possible for people to develop Alzheimer's disease earlier in life. This condition is called Early Onset Alzheimer's, and it makes up about 5% of Alzheimer's cases in the U.S., the Alzheimer's Association states. People with Early Onset Alzheimer's experience cognitive issues like memory loss at an earlier age, often in their 40s or 50s, and may need Alzheimer's care to stay safe and secure in their daily lives.

Spot the Signs of Early Onset Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer's disease is a form of dementia that is mostly known for causing memory loss, but there are other signs you can identify when you're spending time with loved ones, whether they're in their 40s or 80s.

These signs include:

  • Not finishing something due to distraction or confusion. They may in the middle of preparing a meal, or getting ready to go somewhere, but then lose track of what they were doing.
  • Not attending social events or joining in the conversation with their loved ones. They may have trouble keeping up with conversations or figuring out what to say.
  • Making decisions that are obviously wrong. They might buy things they clearly don't need or have space for, or walk out the door in a housecoat in the middle of winter.
  • Expressing confusion about their surroundings. They may not recall where they are or how to get to their home, or be confused about the time, date, or year.
  • Missing plans or important appointments. They may forget about a doctor's appointment, or the plans you made together earlier in the day.
