February is American Heart Health Month, time to look at how we can prevent strokes. The CDC tells us that Strokes are responsible for an estimated 130,000 deaths in the United States each year, CDC. About 795,000 people suffer a stroke each year, and most of those are the first incident.
There are a number of ways for senior care providers to help the elderly reduce their risk of a stroke. Controlling blood pressure is by far the most effective preventative measure, according to Mayo Clinic. Managing medication properly and encouraging physical activity can also make a big difference.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), limiting the intake of saturated fats and cholesterol and following a healthy diet will help seniors stay at an ideal body weight, which is often one of the greatest risk factors for strokes.
As our loved ones age, the role of diet exercise and medication management becomes a key factor in reducing the risk of a stroke or heart attack. Helping seniors stay active and social can also contribute to good overall health.
