With so many Americans aging beyond 65 across the country and here in Sonoma County, it’s no wonder that, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, home care assistants, or aides, are among the top 10 occupations with the largest job growth.
In the summer of 2020, the U.S. Census Bureau released estimates showing the nation’s 65-and-older population had grown rapidly since 2010, driven by the aging of Baby Boomers born between 1946 and 1964. In fact, the 65-and-older crowd grew by over a third (34.2%) during the last decade.
According to Dr. Luke Rogers, chief of the Census Bureau’s Population Estimates Branch,
“The first Baby Boomers reached 65 years old in 2011. Since then, there’s been a rapid increase in the size of the 65-and-older population, which grew by over a third since 2010. No other age group saw such a fast increase.”
In addition, we are living longer than ever before. On average, age of death averages in the U.S. have increased each decade and, since 1960, US life expectancy has risen 8.7 years.
Today, the current U.S. life expectancy is 78.6 years with men averaging just over 76 years and women over 81. However, by the year 2030, it is projected that the average lifespan will be 79.51 years and female life expectancy will be 83.32 in the United States.
And many of these aging seniors will require the services of home care assistants to “age in place” - that is, in their own homes.
The medical industry is filled with acronyms and initials that can be a bit confusing, especially for those who are not employed in that field. This can be especially true for the title of Home Care Assistant.
Home Care Assistants - A Rose by Any Other Name…
These indispensable professionals are known by many other names:
The services and assistance provided by our home care assistants range from helping with day-to-day living activities in a senior’s own home such as housekeeping to preparing meals and even providing personal care needs like bathing and dressing.

One of the things we know well is that, as they get older, many seniors make it known that they want to stay at home rather than be confined to a nursing facility, rehabilitation center, or a hospital. At Interim HealthCare, our senior care program allows seniors to stay in their own homes providing them with independence and dignity.
Which is why we offer personalized home care assistance services in Santa Rosa, Petaluma, Sebastopol, Rohnert Park, and across Sonoma County. Our home care assistants make sure that aging seniors receive the care that they need to continue carrying on their daily lives.
For many people, the image of an in-home caregiver suggests a senior that is infirm or unable to get around on their own. While this is sometimes the case, more often than not, the seniors who make use of our services are capable and healthy, but simply need some help for daily activities now and again.
When You Need a Home Care Assistant
These can include functions such as transportation to appointments, family visits, outings and trips, and more “domestic” chores including such things as meal planning and preparation, grocery shopping, and washing dishes.
In addition, home care assistants can be available to help with more personal tasks like getting dressed, grooming, bathing, personal hygiene, and incontinence care, as well as feeding and helping with their medication.
And one of the more sobering realities of aging is that many of these daily tasks can become more difficult as time goes on. However, with the help provided by trained home care assistants, seniors who choose to live at home can continue to function in a secure and healthy environment.
