When we talk about martial arts, the picture that comes to mind is a fast moving fight sequence with Bruce Lee or Steven Segal. There is one discipline, however, that does not meet the stereotype and can have incredible benefits for seniors. Tai Chi encourages slow, fluid body motions that have been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, enhance self-confidence, and elevate overall well-being. Tai Chi is a low-impact, self-paced exercise allowing for minimal strain on muscles and joints.
Focusing on calm thoughts and deep breathing, Tai Chi stresses the importance of posture and slow deliberate movements. Studies by the National Institutes of Health have shown that Tai Chi is beneficial for seniors because it promotes balance and reduces the risk of falling. Additionally this widely practiced martial art can improve mood and increase daily activity.
Seniors who practice Tai Chi on a regular basis report that they have seen an increase in energy and stamina, quality of sleep, lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels as well as an increase in muscle strength and flexibility. While Tai Chi is considered safe for all ages, anyone with an existing medical condition should first check with their doctor before participating.
