Many seniors prefer to remain in their own homes as they age, but how do we keep them from being too lonely? A 2012 study by Cornell University published in Psychology and Aging, shows that prolonged periods of loneliness can speed up the aging process. While heart functions normally change as a part of getting older, loneliness has been shown to accelerate the process.

One of the key factors when caring for a patient with Alzheimer’s disease is to encourage activities that they enjoy. If for instance, your loved one with Alzheimer’s enjoyed painting earlier in life, but now can only move the brush around the canvas encourage it, as long as they seem to enjoy the activity.
