Senior Care - Eating Healthy Over the Holidays

We’ve all done it - you know, justifying that extra serving of cornbread stuffing or another slice of pumpkin pie because it’s the holidays. We know it’s not good for us, but we figure our New Year’s resolution of weight loss and exercise will take care of the few extra calories in the long term.  Those of us who are caring for seniors have to remember that this cycle can cause problems for people with existing health issues.
 
At Interim HealthCare we understand that the holidays are a special time for everyone and it is human nature to sneak in an extra cookie every now and then. It’s hard to keep that inner child suppressed when there are so many delicious things to try. We should also remember that the Holidays are the most common time for people with dietary restrictions to have problems that cause them to feel worse than usual, or even end up with a more serious issue. However, there are many ways in which you can help to strike a balance between maintaining a healthy diet and joining in with the fun and festivities.
 

  • Exercise
  • Speak with your doctor or nutritionist
  • Balance your meals
  • Be wary of extra sugary foods
  • Stock up on healthy snacks
  • Moderate your alcohol intake
  • Eat only until you’re full
 
Being health-conscious doesn't necessarily mean that you can't enjoy the holidays; it simply means that you should continue to be watchful of what you eat and be prepared for the festivities.
