Making Healthy Choices at a Fast Food Restaurant

For elderly adults and their caregivers, consistently eating a healthy diet is usually a top priority.  Eating healthy, nutrient-rich foods can help prevent serious health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and heart disease in both elderly adults and their caregivers.  Healthy eating also promotes a great quality of life in that those with good eating habits will have a better mood, more energy, sleep better, and will have better overall health.  However, caregivers often have busy days of running errands, taking their loved one to appointments, cleaning the house, working, and more which don’t allow much time for meal planning and cooking. 

On these days, it is tempting to order food or pick up food at a fast food restaurant for its speed, convenience, and lack of clean up.  While fast food restaurants certainly have many high-fat, high-calorie, and high-sugar options that are best avoided, there are ways to make healthy choices at fast food restaurants.  Here are just a few tips for when you want to pick up a quick meal for you and your loved one but don’t want to lose sight of your healthy lifestyle goals:
 

Don’t “Super Size”

Many meals at fast food restaurant come in sizes with the largest one being a portion that is filled with too many fat and calories to consume at one meal for both yourself and your loved one.  Many of these calories actually come from the super-sized sodas which are also a source of unhealthy amounts of sugar.  Try ordering the smallest size meal for a portion that won’t leave you feeling uncomfortably full and won’t give you excess calories and fat.  To make an even healthier choice, ask if you can substitute bottled water for the soda.
 

Beware of Salads

When you order a salad, you may feel like you are making a healthy choice, but many fast food salads have more calories than the other “unhealthy” items on the menu such as the hamburgers and fries!  The reason for this is that the salads often come with high-fat dressings, croutons, or deep fried chicken strips which can add a lot of fat to the meal.  However, salads are a great way to get some fiber-rich vegetables even on the go, so order one with the dressing on the side and add it yourself, grilled chicken instead of fried, and hold the croutons.
