We pride ourselves in being a family owned and operated business, and understand from personal experience the importance of caring for our aging loved ones. Steven’s grandfather, Howard, suffered from a stroke and began showing signs of dementia shortly following the death of his wife of 56 years. Struggling with independent living, Howard feared he would have to leave the home he raised a family and shared so many memories in. Steven could not bear the thought of his grandfather transitioning into a facility, so he offered to move in with him to help.
Caring for his grandfather, Steven helped with activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, toileting) and household chores, but the inevitable decline in Howard’s overall health continued to progress. Feeling concerned, Steven wanted to learn more about the disease and how to help. Throughout his graduate studies, Steven learned about the biological and mental changes that accompany aging, and therefore had a better understanding of his grandfather’s condition.
After graduating with his doctorate in Clinical Neuropsychology, Steven’s career took him from Maryland to Chicago, leaving his grandfather again without care in what he had hoped to be his forever home. The entire family researched all known options, which consisted of assisted living facilities or having Howard move in with other family members, but he insisted on remaining in the home he had lived in for the past 60+ years; he was not comfortable leaving. After speaking with members of their church, the family learned of home health care and was able to find a caregiver to move in with Howard and honor his wishes to age in place.
Honoring and respecting the wishes of our loved ones is the most important gift we can give as they age.
Throughout Steven’s clinical career, he has had the opportunity to work out of an office as well as provide direct care in clients’ homes. It became very clear that meeting the needs of clients in their own environment was much more successful. Steven also never forgot the feeling of gratitude he received from caring for his grandfather. This prompted Steven to research opportunities for a business that would enable him to use his skills and experiences to provide services to others. Interim HealthCare, the nation’s oldest home care company, had an outstanding opportunity to expand the brand into Chicago’s NorthShore area. After meeting with the corporate office, Steven and his spouse, Jamie, became members of the Interim family.
What we enjoy the most about this industry is the opportunity to help people when they are in need – and we get to do that every single day. Receiving his CSA certification, Steven understands the unique stresses and concerns of our aging population and uses this knowledge to tailor service plans to meet the needs of every individual. It’s a wonderful feeling to be able to assist clients, staff, and their families achieve high-quality outcomes, but we here at Interim HealthCare understand that to do that, we need to hire the best staff and caregivers.
We’ve seen first-hand the best and the worst that the senior care industry has to offer – and it seldom compares to the comfort of home.
We’ve also worked with some of the most disadvantaged amongst us and we knew we could find a way to help. We consider it a blessing to be able to contribute to the Lake and McHenry County communities as small business owners, caring employers, and providers of the highest quality in-home care. We’ll remain steadfast in our dedication to the principle that a powerful investment in our family of professional caregivers directly impacts and improves the level of care provided by our caregivers.
