You don’t need a high school diploma to have a passion for helping others, have a heart for aging adults, or become a caregiver in Oregon.

So no, you don’t need a diploma to start your career as a caregiver. You will need to have completed topic-specific training and then take at least 6 hours of Continuing Education (CE) annually.

Topic-specific training covers such things as:

  • Becoming a Caregiver
  • Duties of a Caregiver
  • Communicating with Others
  • Observation, Reporting, and Recording

Once you get started in your career as a professional caregiver, you’ll find plenty of career options down the road. Over time, you may want to pursue your high school diploma while you’re working as a caregiver, which you can do because of the flexible hours the career offers.

After receiving your diploma, pursuing higher education is always a route you can take. The right agency will work with you to help you pursue your dreams while you’re making a difference in people’s lives.

For example, becoming a licensed vocational nurse or registered nurse is possible by completing a certificate, diploma, or associate’s degree in a nursing program. These programs are available at many community colleges, and some classes can even be taken online.

A Personally Satisfying Career

Excellent pay and a career path are tremendous benefits of the profession. Still, caregivers will tell you that the most satisfying aspect of their career is that each day they get to make a difference in people’s lives.

As adults age and aren’t able to take care of some of the daily tasks of adult living, they’re faced with going to a nursing home to have their needs met. As a caregiver, you can make the difference in allowing that person to remain in the place they love and where they feel safest – at home.

Sound interesting? You’re right – it is!
