Now that National Skilled Nursing Home Week, formerly known as National Nursing Home Week, is upon us; Debbie Callander of Lakeridge in Lubbock discussed the needs and services skilled nursing homes provide. "Skilled Nursing homes offer 24-hour nursing services including rehabilitation in physical, occupational and speech therapy." Skilled facilities differ from the standard nursing homes in that standard homes do not take medicade or supplemental policies. "Skilled nursing homes take many forms of insurance: Medicare, Medicaid, Aetna, Humana and various Medicare alternatives. If a resident needs special dietary services they provide it under the supervision of a certified dietitian" She continued.

Looking for a skilled nursing facility can be a stressful journey Callander says, but she offers these tips:

  • What are you looking for location wise?
  • Look up star ratings on Medicare.gov
  • Ask family/friends for recommendations
  • Ask the staff of each place you visit tons of questions, look for smiles and well kept residents
  • Ask about food!
  • Meet the administrator, director of nursing and sit down with the business manager to talk finances.
It's never too early to do research around your community. Hurried decisions aren't the best decisions!
