Top podcasts and resources for nurses

It goes unsaid, but we'll say it anyway -- nurses are incredible! They are the backbone of healthcare, providing critical care to patients, communicating with family and helping other members of the healthcare team stay in step and working together to provide care.

From many of our Interim HealthCare franchise owners to our own president & CEO, Jennifer Sheets, and of course our nurses working one-on-one with patients across the country, our team is comprised of many nurses throughout the United States. So, we know how demanding, challenging and rewarding this job really is -- nurses are truly superheroes.

Down time and self care are so important for nurses

With so much on your plate right now balancing patient care and family, it can be hard to carve out some time to refresh and stay on top of the latest news and trends. Yet, it is imperative that you afford yourself some downtime. Whether it's to relax, refresh, smile and laugh or keep up on the latest developments that affect your personal and professional lives, you need time for YOU.

To help you maximize your downtime and digest content that is relevant and valuable for you, here are some ways to use your down time...

When you're on Instagram

Instagram has quickly become the social network of choice for millions of us (more than 1 billion of us every month, according to the latest data), and there are no shortage of fantastic Instagram resources by and for nurses. Here are some of our favorites:

With memes that will make you smile (if not literally LOL), plus links and important information to help you at work, @NursesProud most definitely embodies their handle -- they celebrate nurses, and provide content that helps you get through your day.

More laugh out loud memes, plus memes that celebrate and inspire, prize giveaways and more -- @NursesofInstagram is another great resource that is very worthy of your Instagram feed.

Kati Kleber, aka FreshRN, share insights, online resources and courses and giveaways specifically for nurses. You'll also find many more resources on her website.

When you need a smile, look no further than @nursesrheroes. Rachel Berne posts memes that will absolutely make you smile or laugh, while celebrating all that you do every day.

When you're listening to podcasts

Sometimes we want to listen to something besides music on our phones. Podcasts have become an excellent way to be entertained, stay connected to a "community" and learn, all while on a walk or run, sitting around the house or in the car...they are the ultimate travel entertainment! Here are a few podcasts for nurses that really rise above the pack, posting regularly and consistently high-quality content:

Cup of Nurses

Hosts Matt Solarczyk and Peter Findura are ICU nurses who bring their unique perspective to current events and topics affecting nurses today. In their own words, "We combine personal experience and modern science to educate, promote, improve your health, wellbeing, and career aspirations as a nurse."

Good Nurse Bad Nurse

Nurses are raving about this unique podcast, which takes a lighthearted and fun -- but also thought-provoking -- look at true crime and hot-topic stories to educate and encourage nurses.

When you're looking for something to read

Sometimes you just want to read some interesting and useful content. When you're in the mood for a little reading, don't miss these strong blogs for nurses:

Brittney Wilson, BSN, RN is a registered nurse and founder of The Nerdy Nurse. On her site (and her social profiles), she shares a range of information for nurses, from a uniquely tech-heavy perspective. On this site, Jerome Stone, RN, shares meditations and inspiration to help you care for your mental and emotional health. The content here isn't updated often, but there are nearly 200 articles and meditations for you to check out and put to use.
