Talking to Your Senior About Setting Goals
Talking to Your Senior About Setting Goals

Setting goals is a fantastic way for your parent to enhance their quality of life and pursue better health and well-being as they age in place. They give your parent the opportunity to discover new sources of excitement and fulfillment, keep them motivated and working toward the next step, and help them to break down larger goals into something more accessible. A great way to start your parent on setting goals is to talk to them about it.
Use these tips to talk to your parent about setting goals:
Ask them if they have any goals, aspirations, or dreams that you don't know about. Simply showing interest in them and the things that they might want in life can be extremely encouraging and beneficial.
Talk to them about the importance of setting goals and how it can help them to enjoy a higher quality of life as they age in place. It doesn't matter what type of goal that they are setting, establishing these goals and working toward them will stimulate their mind, boost their mental and emotional health, and help them to achieve a more fulfilling lifestyle.
Reassure them that you are there for them and will help them to pursue their goals and whatever ways that you can. Find ways that you can work toward these goals together as a means of spending quality time together and showing your love and support to your parent. This is particularly important if your parent is pursuing a goal that may be challenging to them, such as losing weight or getting more active.
Work together to identify ways that your parent can pursue their goal and to set deadlines that will keep them motivated and working towards this goal.
If you have been looking for ways to enhance your aging parent’s quality of life as they age in place, starting elder care for them may be the ideal solution. An elderly home care services provider can create a highly personalized approach to your parent’s care that includes services specifically tailored toward their individual challenges, needs, and limitations. These services are designed to not only help your parent to manage their needs in the way that is right for them, but also to support a lifestyle focused on mental, emotional, and physical health, independence and autonomy, and fulfillment. These services can include everything from safe and reliable transportation, to companionship, to assistance with personal care needs and activities of daily life.
