Interim HealthCare Franchise Owner's Retired to Hired Program in the Spotlight at National Health Care Conference

September 21, 2004
Sunrise, FL

Interim HealthCare franchise owner Darlyn Baker of Bakersfield, California, has been invited to speak at the Private Duty Insider National Conference in Orlando on September 30th. She will address nearly 400 attendees during the Recruitment and Retention portion of the event discussing her "Retired to Hired" program she developed in 1997. "Retired to Hired" is a recruitment program Ms. Baker developed that offers retired senior citizens career opportunities in home health care.

Ms. Baker states, "I am pleased to be given an opportunity to speak about my Retired to Hired program at the Private Duty Insider National Conference. Recruitment and retention is an important part of running a successful home care and health care staffing business, and it can be a challenging effort at a time when the entire nation is experiencing the effects of a nursing shortage. This is initially what inspired me to focus my recruitment efforts on an older generation of employees. Since I began employing seniors, they have proved to be extremely reliable with excellent work ethics." For eight years, the Bakersfield, California office has been recruiting employees over the age of 55 and currently has 48 retired nurses, licensed vocational nurses (LVNs) and home makers on staff.

Seniors are the fastest growing population in the United States. By offering employment to retirees, Ms. Baker has tapped in to a dependable source of employees that has provided many benefits for both her senior employees as well as her home care patients. Retired RNs and LVNs work on skills-appropriate cases. Other retirees work with clients as companions or homemakers, providing assistance to help people remain living independently and safely at home. Retired RNs enjoy a flexible schedule as well as providing patient care in the less chaotic work environment of a home. Ms. Baker also discovered that her senior patients often enjoy being paired with older caregivers. One of Ms. Baker's employees is 83 years old. She provides companionship to an 82 year old woman who says, "She is my lifeline. I don't know what I would do if I didn't have her. We just get along so well. We play cards and talk and laugh. We have just a good time."
