National Immunization Awareness Month Helps Protect the Health of Seniors

SUNRISE, Fla. – August 6, 2014 – We all need shots (also called vaccinations or immunizations) to help protect us from serious diseases. To help keep communities safe across the United States, Interim HealthCare is supporting National Immunization Awareness Month.

“Particularly for older adults, immunization shots can help prevent serious diseases”, comments Karen Carnes, Chief Clinical Officer of Interim HealthCare, Inc.  “Seniors need one or more vaccines, even if they received vaccines as a child or as a younger adult. Getting a flu shot every year is important for most individuals, both children and adults. Older adults should ask their doctors which ones are right for them.”

Vaccines recommended for older adults can prevent Influenza (Flu), Shingles (Herpes Zoster), Diptheria/Tetanus, Pertussis (Whooping Cough) and Pneumococcal (Pneumonia).

For those interested in learning more about vaccines that are needed for older adults, www.vaccines.gov has a great free resource.  Use the Adult Immunization Scheduler tool to receive personalized vaccine recommendations based on age, occupation, health status and other factors.

Knowing which vaccines are needed is an important step toward protecting your health and that of your family and friends.  Getting vaccines on time helps prevent illness before someone is exposed.

Vaccines for older adults can prevent serious diseases and even death. They can also help prevent the spread of disease through your family and community. Talk to your doctor or nurse to make sure that everyone in your family gets the shots they need and don’t forget that if you are traveling, you may need additional vaccines.
