Walking through the wilderness of grief

“In the midst of winter, I found there was within me an invincible summer.”  Albert Camus

In times of grief, the hope of an invincible summer within us can seem like a lost dream from years gone by –  a wisp of someone’s naïve imagination.  When we are losing or have lost someone for whom we deeply care, we feel as if we are left wondering in what Alan Wolfelt describes as “a wilderness – a vast, mountainous, inhospitable forest.”  We often feel confused and disorganized even on our best days – and sometimes in complete despair and emptiness on our worst.

We may not know how we got here, much less how to get out.  The traditional word for grief, “be-reaved” actually means “to be torn apart.”  And that is exactly how we feel.  We feel that a part of our own souls has been “torn apart” from us – and we are left bleeding with emotional wounds from which we sometimes wonder if we will ever fully heal.

Where can I find help and hope?

Chaplin comforts a hospice clientIn times like these, we need one another.  We need the help of those who will listen and be present with us.   We often need the help of those who have been where we are – and even sometimes the help of those who have been trained to help us when we are mourning.

Interim Healthcare Hospice wants to be among those walking with you in as you grieve the loss of your special loved one.  Knowing that the first twelve months after death are the hardest, we are committed to intentionally being with you during this time.

Our master-level educated and clinically trained grief counselors have over twenty years of combined proven experience guiding and walking with persons in this often unfamiliar wilderness.  Interim fulfills our commitment to you through:

One-on-One Private Counseling in Your Home or Our Office

Sometimes we simply need a completely, present friend over a cup of coffee – someone to listen as we share our favorite stories about our loved one  or try to put the pieces of our life back together again.  At other times, we need more intentional guidance and accountability as we set specific goals for our future or our healing.  In either case, Interim’s trained counselors are here for you.

Grief Support Groups all across the Upstate

Sometimes we are looking for help from those who understand because they have been there – because they are there right now.  We don’t want to feel alone.  We want to learn from one another.  Once again, Interim’s grief counselors are committed to connecting you to others in your community who are going through similar experiences.  Our groups are not simply places of support, but we also provided relevant education and tools to help you with your grieving and mourning process.

Semi-Annual Celebrations of Life and Other Mourning Rituals

Many of us need personal and private ceremonies, rituals and traditions to help us mourn, celebrate and honor the great impact our loved ones have had on us.  Not only does this help us courageously face the reality and pain of our loss, but it also spiritually connects us to our fellow humans, past, present and future, who have also walked through “the valley of the shadow of death.”  Each fall and spring, Interim Hospice provides a service of remembrance for all of our families.  And for some reason, if you were not able to provide a personal memorial service for your loved one at death, our experienced team is here to create a meaningful service for you now.

Educational and Emotional Suppor to Healthcare and Religious Organizations

Many of us often overlook the toll that the repeated loss of loved patients and parishioners has on the healthcare community and communities of faith.  We may long to learn how to be there for persons in grief but don’t know how.  Or we may be overwhelmed by our own compassion fatigue or occupational stress that we are struggling to cope.  Interim Hospice’s trained counselors and team are again here for you to provide relevant and informative trainings on a variety of topics related to grief/loss, bereavement care-giving, and stress-management.

Free-Services to the Community at Large

Interim Healthcare Hospice is not simply here for our own patients and families, but we are committed to being a light of help and hope to our communities as well.  All across the Upstate, our grief support groups, private counseling, celebrations of life and educational services are available to any individual or organization in the community free of charge.  It’s just one of the ways we say “thank you” for all of the ways our communities have been there for us.

“My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going.  I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end.  Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so.  But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you and I hope that I have that desire in all that I am doing.  And I know that if I do this, you will lead me by the right road although I may know nothing about it.  Therefore will I trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death, I will not fear, for you are ever with me and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.”
