What to Do If Someone Falls

After an older adult falls, panic is often the first reaction. However, it's important for the family member or caregiver to remain calm. How a person reacts after someone falls can cause more injuries than the fall itself. If you try to have the person get up too quickly or in the wrong position you may make an injury from a fall even worse. Here are the steps to follow:

  • Have the person take several deep breaths, assess the situation and determine if he or she is hurt.
  • If you believe the person is injured, do not attempt to have them get up. Instead, call 911 or get help from another family member, neighbor or other person nearby.
  • If the preson feels strong enough to get up, he or she should follow the steps provided by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons
