Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

by CHritz 3. September 2010 20:52

We’ve made significant progress in the fight against prostate cancer over the last decade. Mortality rates have dropped substantially, yet despite this progress, prostate cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer deaths among men in the United States.

Prostate cancer does not discriminate among husbands, fathers, brothers and sons. It does not differentiate among race, age or income and often affects both those stricken with the disease and their families. Emotionally and financially, it has the potential to touch us all.

While there is considerable research being done to develop better treatments and more effective screening, we need to ensure that more men are educated about all aspects of the disease including prevention, early detection and possible treatment options.

Unfortunately there is no sure way to prevent prostate cancer, but at Interim HealthCare we believe there are certain lifestyle choices you can make that may aid in prostate cancer prevention.

  • Diet - fruits, vegetables and foods high in folate and diindolylmethane are good for you. So are whole-grains. A diet high in saturated fats, supersized portions and excessive alcohol is not.
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids - while most kinds of fat are linked to higher cancer rates, there is an exception. Study results are still mixed, but the general consensus that the Omega-3 fatty acids found in cold-water fish such as salmon may reduce some forms of cancer.
  • Antioxidants - drink green tea because it contains antioxidants such as polyphenols that may help prevent certain cancers and other health problems.
  • Regular Checkups - stay in habitual contact with your doctor about your prostate health.

Despite the great medical advancements made in the fight against prostate cancer, National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month reminds us that there is substantial work to still be done.
