You ever notice that when you pet a dog or cat while sitting on the sofa, you relax and your heart slows down just a little bit? Pets in fact have proven to be an important form of social contact especially for seniors and a growing number of research now points to the boost in physical health that pets can provide. Studies show that pet ownership is linked to increased chances of heart attack survival and reduced blood pressure while others have shown that pets can sometimes help with Alzheimer’s.
At Interim HealthCare, we know how important a pet can be in the lives of the seniors we care for. Pals2Pets, our pet-friendly in-home senior care program, was specifically designed to meet the needs of both seniors and their pets, which allows our seniors to remain in their homes longer and live more enriched lives. In addition to providing the superior in-home care that Interim is renowned for, our Pals2Pets professionals will also help with daily pet-related tasks such as walking and feeding, among others.
There are number of explanations as to how pets provide such a benefit to seniors. For many seniors, pets allow them to stay physically active while keeping joints flexible and limber. However, many benefits of pet ownership are less tangible. Pets are an incredible source of companionship and can provide a much-needed support system for those seniors who don’t have family or friends close by. Pets can also help combat depression by providing a sense of purpose.
Young or old, pets provide that unconditional love we all desire. However, there are number of responsibilities that come with pet ownership and its important to make sure that seniors are up to the task financially, emotionally and socially. Pets and the elderly have a lot to give to each other. Research and experience has shown that animals and older people can share their time and affection, and ultimately enrich each other’s lives. Although pets can never replace human relationships, they can certainly enhance them.
