June is Men’s Health Month and this week is National Men’s Health Week, which, along with Father’s Day, is a perfect opportunity to make sure senior men are doing all they can to prevent common health problems. Below are some simple, but effective tips on how senior men can stay in shape and stay in the game.
Exercise
The notion that exercise is good for you has been around for a while, but until recently seniors had been left out of the picture. Today we know unequivocally that even moderate exercise and physical activity can improve the health of senior men and prevent or delay many diseases or disabilities. It is never too late for senior men to start exercising. Research shows that exercise can help seniors maintain or restore strength, balance, flexibility and endurance.
Get a Checkup
In addition to staying fit, it’s a good idea for senior men to get regular cancer screenings because prostate, colon, lung and skin cancers all have the highest successful treatment rates when caught early. According to a 2001 report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, women were 100 percent more likely than men to visit the doctor for annual examinations and preventative services. Regular checkups, colonoscopies and physicals are the best way for men to catch problems early and ensure they will be around for a very long time.
Nutrition
Remember the old adage, “You are what you eat?” Concentrating on a few healthy diet tips can help senior men feel better and live longer. Good-for-you-foods can help seniors increase energy levels, improve brain power, combat illness and strengthen immune systems. Start mornings off with a good balanced breakfast. Fruits, whole grains and proteins can help jump start the metabolism and get a day going on the right foot. Also remember that senior men should drink plenty of water. Even though a couple extra trips to the bathroom can be annoying, chronic dehydration can lead to some serious problems. And lastly, make sure senior men are getting all their essential vitamins and minerals. They can be particularly important for seniors who struggle with eating a balanced diet or for seniors on certain medications. But before taking any vitamins or supplement, always consult with a doctor first.
Following these simple tips can help ensure a healthier future.
