Christmas Eve is here and family gathering time in near so we just wanted to remind you of a few tips to keep Grandma and Grandpa or other senior relatives safe. Whether they are coming to visit you or if you’re going to visit them, take this opportunity to show you care by taking the proper precautions. Interim HealthCare is dedicated to senior safety and has prepared a quick check list below of how you can ensure a safe visit with the senior(s) you love.
If the Senior is visiting you:
• Be sure all walk areas are clear and remove loose rugs.
• Clear electronic cords out of the way.
• Greet them at their car rather than at the front door to assist them walking on the icy or wet pathways or up any steps or stairs.
• Help them carry in the presents so their hands remain free to use for additional balance.
• Take a minute to think about any dietary restrictions they may have and if necessary prepare something low sodium or sugar fee just for them, this will make them feel extra special.
• Finally, talk to the kids about helping out and keeping their toys out of the way. Ask them to not run or circle around the seniors as this activity could easily startle them or get them dizzy in which case they could loose their balance.
If you’re visiting the Senior:
All of the above can apply as well, but also take this opportunity to inspect around for potentially hidden dangers which should include:
• Damaged appliances, so they got their toaster in 1974 and it still toasts but is it really safe?
• Damaged cords to lamps, clocks, appliances and damaged extension cords are all fire hazards.
• Check smoke & carbon dioxide detectors’ batteries and test to ensure they are working properly.
• Space heaters are great for heating a room and saving on electricity but can be very dangerous. Be sure space heaters are placed far away from clothing, bedding, rugs, furniture and trash cans and clear from walking paths.
If you’re only going to be seeing them on Christmas Day you might even want to make a trip to a 24 hour store to replace any hazards you find so and your beloved senior can rest easy going into the new year.
Finally, a tip I got from the Griswold family, if Aunt Edna shows up with package that is meowing, open it right away!
Interim HealthCare is dedicated to enriching the lives of seniors everyday. We wish you and your loved ones a safe, happy holiday season and a very Merry Christmas.
